The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (May 9, 2025) made the announcement that the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely amidst the escalating military tensions between Indian and Pakistan.

The tournament’s continuity was at risk after Thursday’s game between Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala was abandoned midway into the fixture after air raid alerts in the neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.

Additionally, blackouts were enforced across several districts like Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Mohali, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh after the air raid alarms and the circulation of reports regarding explosion-like sounds coming from Jammu as well.

“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," a BCCI official told PTI.

    Concerns Among Foreign Players

The heightened military tensions also became a massive concern, especially amongst the foreign players. According to reports, it is suggested that the overseas stars will be flown back in the coming few days.

“The players are doing well, but of course, there is concern among them after seeing all that has happened," an IPL team official told PTI when asked about the foreign players’ state of mind.

Cricket Australia and the New Zealand Players Association have already expressed their concerns about the players’ security amidst the ongoing tensions between the two nations.

The players who were involved in yesterday’s game are also on their way to Delhi by road.

This also means that today’s fixture in Lucknow, where the Lucknow Super Giants were supposed to take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, also stands suspended along with the rest of the fixtures in the tournament.

Several teams like the Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants have showcased their support for the cause after the announcement was made regarding the suspension.

As of now, 12 league games and four knockout fixtures, including the big finale at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Lucknow, have yet to be played.
