Shankaracharya Jayanti 2025: Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti is observed annually to celebrate the birth of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, the great Indian philosopher and spiritual reformer. The day is marked on the Panchami tithi (fifth day) in the Shukla paksh in the Vaishakh month, as per the Hindu calendar.

Shankaracharya is credited with reviving Advaita Vedanta when the Hindu culture was on the decline during the 8th century. His teachings continue to influence Indian thought, spirituality, and culture. At the age of 32 in the year 820 CE, he is said to have disappeared.

    Born in Kalady, Kerala, during 788 CE, Shankaracharya worked towards spreading the message of the Vedas across the country. The revered saint breathed his last at a young age. Even after his unfortunate death, his teachings continued to inspire people across generations, paving the way for his birthday to be celebrated as Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti.

    It is also believed that Adi Shankara was an incarnation of Lord Shiva in a human form. He is known for consolidating the doctrine of Advaita Vedanata along with other Hindu hermits like Madhava and Ramanuja. All three of them played an instrumental role in the revival of Hinduism and formed the policies that are followed by their respective sects even today.

    Some of Adi Shankaracharya’s notable works include his commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita and 12 Upanishads. The Hindu hermit is also known for crediting nearly 72 devotional hymns like Sivananda Lahari, Nirvana Shatakam, Maneesha Panchakam and Soundarya Lahari.
