Schools have been shut in border districts of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan amid rising India-Pakistan tensions following Operation Sindoor.

Amid rising tensions following heavy artillery and mortar shelling by Pakistan targeting forward villages in Jammu and Kashmir, several border districts in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan have shut down schools and other educational institutions as a precautionary measure.

All schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch districts were closed on May 7, 2025, due to the escalating situation along the Line of Control (LoC). The Divisional Commissioner Jammu further shared the update that the educational institute will remain shut on May 8 too.

Punjab: Schools Closed In Six Border Districts
Authorities have ordered the closure of schools in Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran districts.
In Tarn Taran, all schools will remain shut from May 8 to May 11.
In Ferozepur, schools will be closed for 72 hours, with further updates awaited.
In Fazilka, schools will remain closed until further notice.
Rajasthan: Educational Institutions Shut In Four Districts
All government and private schools up to Class 12 in the border districts of Barmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer have been closed from May 8, 2025, until further orders. Exams have been postponed, and the directive also applies to Anganwadi centres and madrasas.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Retaliation
On May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor, a strategic counterstrike targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 tourists.
Targets included the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke. Following the strikes, the Pakistan Army retaliated with intense shelling, significantly escalating tensions between the two nations.
