Ruben Amorim Claims 'Worst Man United Team In PL History' Could Win In Europe

Amorim knows all too well not to have the Red Devils "lose our mind a little bit" if they are to reach a final that will be played at Bilbao's San Mames ground on May 21.

They may be undefeated in Europe so far this season, but Ruben Amorim says nothing will change if he wins the UEFA Europa League with the “worst" Manchester United team in Premier League history.

United currently lie at a lowly 15th in the Premier League, having only scraped through to the final four of the Europa League after a comeback for the ages (thanks to Harry Maguire) against Lyon.

However, at the San Mames last week, Bruno Fernandes netted twice, and more importantly, to everyone’s surprise, Maguire navigated the wing elegantly, faking out the defender and delivering a stellar cross that ultimately led to Casemiro’s goal — all leading to United securing a 3-0 win in the first leg.

With one foot in the final, United could perhaps push on forward with dreams of Europe.

But ahead of Thursday’s return encounter at Old Trafford, Amorim remained stoic to the idea of possible success in the Europa League leading to any real change.

“At the end of this season, we can be the worst (United) team in Premier League history with a European title, so it will change nothing," Amorim told reporters on Wednesday.

“We know that this season was really disappointing for everybody. Nothing is going to change that," added United manager Amorim, who took charge of the fallen English giants after replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag in November.

All 133 teams in the Europa League’s history who have scored three or more goals away from home in the first leg have gone through to the next round.

But, just like every United fan, Amorim knows all too well not to have the Red Devils “lose our mind a little bit" if they are to reach a final that will be played at Bilbao’s San Mames ground on May 21.

“If you look at our season, anything is possible, so we have to understand that one goal can change anything, the momentum of the game," he said.

“One sending off, you saw it a week ago. So we are prepared to fight to win the game, and not think about the result."

Athletic face a tough task, but United have lost 3-0 at Old Trafford three times so far this season and were beaten 4-3 at Brentford last weekend.

“I feel that we need to score to go to the next round, so that is clearly the way we are going to face the game," Amorim said.
