After becoming a household name with his jaw-dropping 101 off 38 deliveries against the same opposition in IPL 2013, Miller retained his blistering avatar versus the RCB attack the following summer when his scintillating knock took the strings out of the opposition in Bengaluru.
Going at a strike-rate of 227.58, Miller smashed the ball to all parts of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and produced eight fours and three maximums during his memorable innings. Walking in at number four after Punjab’s then-top 3 Virender Sehwag (30), Mandeep Singh (21) and Glenn Maxwell (25) set up the right foundation for him with their cameos. Miller blasted RCB’s pacers and spinners to take his team to an imposing score of 198/8.
Later, medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma dismissed RCB’s legendary top-order duo Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli as Punjab overcame a scare from South African great AB de Villiers to coast home with a win.
De Villiers was in top form and came up with a terrific 53 off 26 balls. But once he departed, Punjab closed out the contest with Shivam Sharma (2/26), Mitchell Johnson (1/25), Lakshmipathy Balaji (2/43) and Axar Patel (1/22) backing Sandeep’s spell at the start.
While Sandeep played a huge role in the contest, it was Miller who earned the Player of the Match award for tilting the scales decisively in Punjab’s favour with his knock in the first half. Miller had an amazing IPL 2014, contributing 446 runs in 16 innings at a strike-rate of 149.16 in his team’s run to the final.
