With safety and security being the need of the hour, the BCCI was quick to bring all proceedings to a halt.
But, now what? What does the possible future of the IPL 2025 look like? Well, let’s explore all we know about the same.
Why Was IPL 2025 Suspended?
The IPL 2025 match between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was called off on Thursday because of a blackout near the LoC after air-raid warnings in nearby Jammu and Pathankot, raising concerns of security.
Has The IPL Been Suspended Previously?
This is not the first time that the IPL has not gone on as usual. There have been four past instances of the league either being suspended or moved out of India due to non-sporting reasons.
Season | Incident Type | Action Taken | Reason | Location |
---|---|---|---|---|
2009 | Entire season moved | Held in South Africa | General elections | South Africa |
2014 | Partial move | First leg in the UAE, Second in India | General elections | UAE & India |
2020 | Entire season moved | Held in the UAE | COVID-19 pandemic | UAE |
2021 | Suspended mid-way | Resumed later in UAE | COVID-19 bio-bubble breach | India to UAE |
Evacuation Plans For Current Players
As per reports, a special train was arranged by the BCCI to evacuate the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals players and staff from Dharamshala to Delhi on Friday.
What About The Overseas Players? How Many Are There?
There are many overseas cricketers, support staff members, match officials, and broadcasters associated with the IPL currently.
There are currently 72 overseas players playing in the IPL 2025, playing across all 10 teams.
Safety Concerns Regarding Overseas Players
Much concern has been raised by the foreign players regarding their security, reportedly requesting to depart for their respective homes following the Dharamshala incident.
“Reliable IPL sources have revealed that foreign recruits want to head home at the earliest," PTI reported.
It was also reported by Sydney Morning Herald that several Australian players are considering exiting the Indian Premier League as they grow anxious over their safety, after the increased firing from both sides on Thursday.
“We continue to closely monitor the situation in Pakistan and India, including obtaining regular advice and updates from the Australian Government, the PCB, BCCI, and local government authorities and maintaining communication with our players and support staff currently in the region," Cricket Australia said in a statement on Friday.
Possible Course Of Action For IPL 2025
If the reports are to be trusted, then it will be on the BCCI to address the security concerns of the overseas players and figure out the optimal travel plans for them, if the league is to remain suspended for an extended period of time.
With regards to the resumption of the IPL 2025 itself, it is believed that the BCCI might pull the Indian team out of the upcoming Asia Cup later this year and use that window to complete the remainder of the IPL, if needed.
