Points Table 2025: Gujarat Titans and RCB Level on Points
As IPL 2025 edges closer to the playoffs, the battle for top-four spots has reached fever pitch, with Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) locked at the top with 16 points each from 11 matches. GT currently lead the table thanks to a superior net run rate of +0.79, reflecting their dominance across both departments. Their ability to close out close games has kept them in pole position. RCB, also with eight wins, follow closely with a net run rate of +0.48, bolstered by standout individual performances and a balanced squad that continues to deliver under pressure.
Just one point behind in third are Punjab Kings (PBKS), with 15 points from 11 matches, including one no-result. Their net run rate of +0.37 highlights their consistency and adaptability throughout the season. In fourth place sit the Mumbai Indians (MI), who have played 12 matches and secured 14 points. Despite an extra loss, MI have posted the highest net run rate in the league at +1.15, largely driven by their explosive batting and potent bowling combinations, keeping them well in the hunt for a top-two finish.
Delhi Capitals (DC) occupy fifth place with 13 points from 11 matches. With a healthy net run rate of +0.36, DC remain very much in the playoff mix and will aim to convert upcoming opportunities into crucial wins. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are sixth with 11 points from 12 games and a net run rate of +0.19. While slightly behind, KKR have three remaining matches and the momentum to potentially leapfrog into the top four, provided they maintain consistency in performance.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) sit seventh with 10 points from 11 matches and a negative NRR of -0.46. Their path to the playoffs is now narrow, and every remaining fixture will be a must-win. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), on the other hand, are out of contention, languishing in eighth place with just seven points and a worrying net run rate of -1.192. Their campaign has been marred by inconsistency and a lack of execution at key moments.
At the bottom of the table, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have both been officially knocked out of playoff contention. RR have only 6 points from 12 matches and an NRR of -0.71, while CSK, with an identical win-loss record, have an NRR of -0.99. As the league phase approaches its final week, the battle for playoff spots remains fierce among the top six, setting the stage for a gripping finish to the IPL 2025 league stage.
IPL Points Table
The IPL points table is one of the keenly followed components of a season, and it generates equal interest among the teams, players, and the fans. It not only reflects the up-to-date top-performing team of/during a season but also helps in deciding which four teams will qualify for the playoffs and continue their push for the title. Additionally, it also helps in deciphering the teams that are on the rise or the ones that are undergoing a decline.
It has different elements that play a key role in determining the rankings of the 10 teams. The elements are matches played, matches won, matches lost, no results, net run rate, and points collected.
For each win, a team is awarded 2 points, while 0 points are given for a defeat. Should a match be abandoned for any reason (unless rescheduled), the two teams get a point each.
So, with each match, the table undergoes changes. A win can push a team ahead in the race for the IPL playoffs, while a defeat may dent their top-four chances.
The four teams that have collected the most points out of the 10 get to feature in the playoffs which further decides the last two opponents who will battle in the grand finale.
However, there are times when two or more teams might end up level on points. So, what happens then? Well, it gets a little complicated as then the net run rate (NRR) comes into play. The team that has a better NRR gets the preference in the rankings.
The teams keep a close watch on the table to help them recalibrate their plans.
Teams vie to finish among the top two of the IPL points table, as it gives them two shots at making the final. The top two teams get an entry into the first qualifier, and the winner of it qualifies for the final. The loser, though, gets a second chance through the second qualifier.
The teams that finish third and fourth get an entry into what is known as Eliminator. The winning team advances to the second qualifier, where it takes on the loser of the first qualifier, and whoever comes out on top qualifies for the final.
Interestingly, in the 17-season history of the Indian Premier League, only six times has a team topping the points table gone on to win the title as well. Mumbai Indians have achieved this double thrice in their history, while Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, and Kolkata Knight Riders have done it once each.
For the first three seasons of the IPL, two semifinals were held to decide the finalists. However, from 2011 onwards, playoffs were introduced that enabled the top two performing teams a couple of chances to qualify for the final, unlike the semifinals, where a defeat ended title hopes even if a team had topped the points table.
Kolkata Knight Riders finished at the top of the points table after winning 9 of their 14 matches while losing thrice. Two matches ended in a no result. The 9 victories and two no results gave them 20 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals finished with 17 points each. However, SRH had a better NRR, so they clinched the second spot. Similarly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants also finished level on points—each collecting 14 points. However, RCB pipped their opponents to clinch the fourth spot due to a superior NRR.

Each team is awarded two points for a win while 0 points for a defeat. There are no ties since a Super Over is used to decide the winner. In case a game gets abandoned, each team gets one point. The team accumulating the greatest number of points get the higher rankings on the IPL table.
If two teams have same points on the IPL points table, then the team with the better net run-rate is ranked higher.
Net Run Rate in IPL is the method used to break ties (in case of same number of points) between teams and decide their positions on the points table. It is calculated by subtracting average runs per over scored against a team from average runs per over scored by them.
The top-four teams at the end of the league phase on the IPL points table qualify for the playoffs.
The advantage of finishing in the top two in the IPL points table is that the teams will get two chances (should they fluff the first) of making it to the final. The top-two teams play each other in the Qualifier 1 and the winner enter the final. However, the loser of this clash then advances to the Qualifier 2 and the winner here becomes the second finalist.
If an IPL match is abandoned for some reason, say bad weather, then one point is awarded to each of the two teams.
Each team plays 14 matches during the IPL league stage. Since two points are awarded for a victory, 28 is the maximum number of points each team can accumulate.
Yes, a team with negative net run rate can qualify for the playoffs provided it has enough points or the NRR is good enough for it to be placed among the top-four teams of the league stage.
