After bagging his trophy, Ruud reunited with Maria, who had flown to Madrid so she could cheer him on in the final.
In his winner’s speech, Ruud gave a shoutout to his close family and friends, acknowledging their role in his success.
“I owe a lot of my success to all my closest ones. My family, my friends, my fiancée Maria. We got engaged last year, so she’s been an incredible support for me over many years now," Ruud said.
The Norwegian will now turn his attention to the Italian Open, aiming to extend his winning streak at the ATP Masters 1000 event, which starts on May 7.
Rising star Draper, who will move fifth in the world rankings on Monday above Novak Djokovic, was hoping to add to his Indian Wells title in March, but Ruud outlasted him in his third Masters final.
“It feels great, of course, it’s been a long time coming, it’s one really big goal that I have dreamt about since I was young," Ruud said.
The Norwegian was coming off a quarterfinal defeat to Holger Rune at the Barcelona Open last month. But in Madrid, Ruud stunned third-seeded Taylor Fritz and ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, before getting the better of fifth-seeded Draper.
